WHAT IS PROPOLIS?

Propolis is a natural substance produced by bees from various plant resins. The word "propolis" comes from the ancient Greek "pro," meaning "before," and "polis," meaning "city" or "citadel," because bees use it to protect their hives and maintain a healthy environment.

The exact origin of propolis can vary depending on the resin sources collected. Bees gather these resins from different parts of plants, such as buds, bark, leaves or conifers. They then mix these resins with beeswax, pollen and salivary secretions to create propolis.

Where pollen serves as a food supplement contributing to the bee's nutrition, the main role of propolis within the hive is to strengthen the hive's structure and ensure its tightness by sealing gaps and openings. It is also produced to reduce microbiological stress by acting as an antibacterial and antifungal agent, thus helping to keep the hive free from bacteria, fungi and other pathogens.

Outside the beekeeping world, like honey or pollen, propolis is also harvested by humans for its medicinal properties. It has been used in various medical traditions since Antiquity for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and healing effects.

WHAT IS THE HISTORY OF PROPOLIS?

Propolis has a long history dating back to Antiquity. Ancient civilizations, such as ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, were already aware of its benefits. The Egyptians used it in the mummification process for its preservative effects, while the ancient Greeks knew of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects and mentioned it as a protective element for the bee.

In various cultures around the world, propolis has been used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of health issues, from skin conditions to infection care.

During World War II, propolis was used as a wound disinfectant because of its antibacterial properties.

Over time, this natural product has attracted the interest of scientific research, and studies have been conducted to assess its effects on human health. Promising results have been obtained regarding its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Today, propolis, like honey, is still used in various fields, including natural medicine, herbal medicine, dentistry, and the cosmetics industry. It remains a precious substance, valued for its health benefits and its essential role in protecting hives and bees.

Within the hive, a true harmony unfolds between the treasures it holds. Propolis, a resinous blend with antibacterial properties, fits harmoniously into this beekeeping ecosystem. Combined with honey, a sweet elixir with multiple benefits, and royal jelly, a true nutritional concentrate, propolis reveals its full synergistic power. This union creates a unique synergy where each component interacts with the others to strengthen immune defenses, protect their home and support vitality. It is in this alchemy that wax, an essential building material, finds its place by holding everything together. Together, these elements complement one another to offer a wealth of benefits and are a reminder of nature's wisdom when it comes to health, care and protection.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF PROPOLIS?

Here are some of the potential benefits of propolis:

• Immune system support: Propolis may strengthen the immune system by helping fight infections and increasing the body's resistance to illness.

• Antibacterial and antifungal: Propolis may help inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria and fungi, making it a natural remedy for skin issues, respiratory infections and urinary infections, among others.

• Anti-inflammatory action: Propolis may reduce inflammation, which can help relieve joint and muscle pain, as well as support the treatment of inflammatory conditions.

• Antioxidant effect: Thanks to its antioxidant compounds, propolis may help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from oxidative stress, helping to prevent certain health issues linked to the body's aging process.

• Skin care: Used in cosmetic preparations, propolis heals and soothes, helping to treat skin conditions and issues such as acne, burns, cuts and wounds.

• Oral protection: it is often used in dentistry for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, helping prevent oral and throat infections, treat gum problems, keep the mouth healthy and support overall dental health.

• Managing cold and flu symptoms: Propolis may help relieve cold, flu and respiratory infection symptoms thanks to its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Before using it for a specific health issue, it is best to consult a healthcare professional, especially if you are allergic to bee products.
